This company set out to change the world, but only a tiny way. Its goal has always been to make things a little better for everyone who comes into contact with its products, its people, or its conduct. And after 15 years I can say that our products are beautiful, our people are great, and our practices over those years still allow me to sleep well at night. So, on balance I think we are ahead.
At the beginning we made all our products within sight of my drawing table in our studio, using equipment designed and built by ourselves. I would draw the design onto clear film, expose it onto a silk screen, then print it onto the velvet, cook it in a large homemade oven (not the safest era for our company), and then scrape off some of the velvet to reveal the image. We would then hand paint the fabric, cut and sew it. I felt that this was the way to make sure everything was well and fairly made.
But then I went to Nepal and there I met many very skilled craftsmen and women. So why couldn’t I design something for them to make that we can’t? Well, I could, and they did. And all sides were happy. And I actually have my own desk there where I can still see most everything being made. Then someone said that in Viet Nam they did some pretty fantastic embroidery. Guatemala soon followed. Having all these new options makes our collections so much richer and deeper, and keeps the ideas coming to us as we learn more about these intriguing places.
Our collection now includes handmade rugs, bedding, robes, decorative pillows, lighting, folding screens, and our latest offering - a line of yoga accessories. All are designed and made fairly and under our close supervision.
But enough about us; what about you? You need to be happy with what you buy and why you buy it, as well as the global impact it makes. We feel confident that you will be delighted with our work - its beauty and integrity apparent today, tomorrow, and 50 years from now.
